Community Standards and Conduct engages students in meaningful educational opportunities that promote ethical behavior and citizenship.
- Educate students on their rights and responsibilities regarding ethical decision making, citizenship, and community standards.
- Develop student’s ability to respectfully communicate and interact with others.
- Promote character development.
The purpose of the Student Code of Conduct and the Conduct Review Process is to support the university in maintaining a safe, healthy and positive campus community and online environment for living, learning and working where individuals act lawfully and in compliance with university policies and rules, and act with honesty, integrity, civility and respect for themselves and others.
Any behavior that is inconsistent with these goals, whether on or off campus, is prohibited and constitutes a violation of the Student Code of Conduct.
If a student is found responsible for a violation of the Student Code of Conduct, the student will be given one or more sanctions.
Sanctions are designed to help prevent future Student Code of Conduct violations, educate students on appropriate behavior required to succeed in the workplace and live in society, and where appropriate, to remedy any damage done.
Residential Life strives to provide students with a home that is safe, dynamic, and promotes academic and personal development in shared living environment.
To accomplish this, the office provides students with opportunities to learn beyond the classroom, experiences to build camaraderie, community development and affinity, and encourages active participation in a diverse and inclusive community.
To maintain a standard of living that is fair and consistent, Residential Life requires all residents and guests to adhere to the rules and policies governing on-campus housing. Violations of the Student Code of Student Conduct and/or the Campus Living Guidelines will result in university disciplinary action.
Guides
Resident students must adhere to the Guide to On-campus Living, and more information can be found on the Living On Campus page.
Culinary/Knife Kits
Note: Culinary/Knife Kits are the only knives that are permitted in residence halls. They must be properly stored in their case and kept with you or in your room. We encourage you to engrave your information onto your kits through Campus Safety & Security.
When you live off campus as a JWU student, you’re actually part of two communities: JWU, and the neighborhood in which you live. Being a good citizen of both is a major responsibility you undertake when you decide to live off-campus. Furthermore, it’s important to realize that the JWU Student Code of Conduct extends to your behavior off campus.
Living off campus carries certain responsibilities. As a student living in the community, you are a representative of JWU and your conduct will reflect directly on the university.
Off-campus students must adhere to and review:
Key Reminders
- Exercise good judgment and be sensitive to the needs of your neighbors — introduce yourself to them.
- Do not sell or provide alcohol to anyone under the applicable legal drinking age or for a gathering where anyone under the applicable drinking age is drinking.
- Keep a professional and positive relationship with your landlord.
- As a social host, you assume all risks associated with state and local laws regulating drinking age, noise and public safety when you host a party at your apartment or home.
Avoiding policy violations and keeping yourself and others safe go hand in hand when living in an urban environment.
The JWU campus, the city of Providence and the surrounding communities can be wonderful places to be when you provide the care and attention necessary in any living situation.
